A see whose chair stands empty is recorded as vacant rather than filled with a guess. On what a bishop is, see the bishop.

The cathedral

Cathedral of Saints Donatus and Peter stands in Arezzo, the church that holds the cathedra from which this see takes its name.

Its co-cathedral is Co-Cathedral of S. Maria Assunta (Cortona) and Co-Cathedral of S. Giovanni Evangelista.

On what a cathedral is, see the cathedral; every see church on earth is gathered at the cathedrals.

History

Since 1986 the historic diocese of Arezzo has been joined with the dioceses of Cortona and Sansepolcro, producing the present Latin diocese of Arezzo-Cortona-Sansepolcro (Latin: Dioecesis Arretina-Cortonensis-Biturgensis seu Burgi Sancti Sepulchri). The enlarged see is a suffragan of the archdiocese of Florence.
