Pelotas was erected as a diocese in 1910 and elevated to a metropolitan archdiocese by Pope Benedict XVI on April 13, 2011. It is the metropolitan see of the ecclesiastical province of Pelotas in Rio Grande do Sul, with suffragans Bage and Rio Grande.

History
Located in the city of Pelotas in Rio Grande do Sul, this Roman Catholic archdiocese (Latin: Archidioecesis Pelotensis) was formerly part of the ecclesiastical province of Porto Alegre in Brazil; on April 13, 2011 it was raised to an archdiocese in its own right.
