First established as the Territorial Prelature of Ponta de Pedras in 1963, it was elevated to a diocese on October 16, 1979. Located on Marajo island in Para and suffragan to Belem do Para, it has been led by Bishop Teodoro Mendes Tavares, a Cape Verdean Spiritan, since 2015. No standalone official diocesan website was found.
