History

A Latin archdiocese in Brazil, São Luís do Maranhão carries the Latin title Archidioecesis Sancti Ludovici in Maragnano. Its cathedral, the Catedral de São Luís do Maranhão in the city of São Luís do Maranhão, is a World Heritage Site (Minor). The see was raised to an archdiocese on 2 December 1921 by decree of the Sacred Consistorial Congregation, and then to a metropolitan see on 10 February 1922 through the bull Rationi congruit of Pope Pius XI.
