The Archdiocese of Barcelona is a Latin Church metropolitan archdiocese in Catalonia, Spain, with roots in the 4th century. It was elevated to an archdiocese in 1964 and became metropolitan in 2004, with suffragans Sant Feliu de Llobregat and Terrassa.

History

Barcelona, in the Catalonia region of northeastern Spain, is the seat of a Latin metropolitan archbishopric of the Catholic Church, the Archdiocese of Barcelona (Latin: Archidioecesis Barcinonensis). Its cathedral, the Catedral Basílica Metropolitana de la Santa Creu i Santa Eulàlia, holds the rank of Minor basilica, and nine further Minor basilicas stand within the archbishopric. Juan José Omella Omella has served as archbishop since his appointment by Pope Francis on 6 November 2015.
