The mission was erected as an apostolic prefecture on 19 December 1905 and elevated to a diocese on 3 May 1979. It is a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Agana (Guam); its cathedral is the Cathedral of the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

History
Spanning the Federated States of Micronesia and the Republic of Palau, the Catholic Diocese of Caroline Islands (Latin: Diœcesis Carolinensium) is a suffragan diocese of the Ecclesiastical Province of Agaña. A bishop leads the diocese and pastors its mother church, the Cathedral of the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
