History

On the island of Sulawesi (formerly Celebes) in Indonesia, the Diocese of Manado (Indonesian: Keuskupan Manado; Latin: Manadoën(sis)) is a Latin Rite suffragan see of the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Makassar, though it depends on the missionary Roman Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples. Its episcopal cathedral, the Cathedral Church of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (Gereja Hati Tersuci Maria), stands on the iconic Sam Ratulangi Street in the city of Manado, Sulawesi Utara, notable for its European architectural styles, unique bell towers, and a beautiful central cupola crowning the building.
