A see whose chair stands empty is recorded as vacant rather than filled with a guess. On what a bishop is, see the bishop.

The cathedral

Church of Saint Thomas, Jerusalem stands in Jerusalem, the church that holds the cathedra from which this see takes its name.

On what a cathedral is, see the cathedral; every see church on earth is gathered at the cathedrals.

History

Serving Palestine and Jordan, the Syriac Catholic Patriarchal Exarchate of Jerusalem (informally Jerusalem of the Syriacs) is a Patriarchal exarchate, a missionary Eastern Catholic pre-diocesan jurisdiction, of the Syriac Catholic Church, which follows the Antiochian Rite in the Syriac language and Arameic. It depends directly on the Syriac Catholic Patriarch of Antioch, whose see is in Beirut, belongs to no ecclesiastical province, and in Rome answers to the Dicastery for the Eastern Churches. The Church of Saint Thomas in Jerusalem serves as its cathedral episcopal see.
