History
Puthur (also written Puttur) holds a distinction within the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church: it was the first Syro-Malankara diocese established in southern Karnataka, India. The eparchy, sometimes called Puthur of the Syro-Malankars, is a suffragan of the Metropolitan Syro-Malankara Catholic Archeparchy of Tiruvalla. That province in turn depends on the Major Archbishop of Trivandrum, head of the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church (an Antiochian Rite Eastern Catholic particular church using the Syriac and Malayalam languages), and through him on the Roman Congregation for the Oriental Churches.
