History

A Latin Church diocese of the Catholic Church in French Polynesia, the Diocese of Taiohae (also Tefenuaenata, or Hakapehi; Latin: Dioecesis Taiohaënus seu Humanae Telluris; French: Diocèse de Taiohae ou Tefenuaenata) is a suffragan within the ecclesiastical province of the Archdiocese of Papeete, while still depending on the missionary Roman Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples. Its cathedral episcopal see, the Cathédrale Notre-Dame des Îles Marquises, dedicated to Mary, mother of Jesus, stands at Taiohae on Nuku Hiva in the Marquesas Islands (French: îles Marquises).
