Archdiocese of Warmia

Varmien(sis)

Latin-rite metropolitan archdiocese in northeastern Poland, erected as the Diocese of Warmia on 29 July 1243 and elevated to a metropolitan archdiocese on 25 March 1992, with the Dioceses of Elk and Elblag as suffragans. Its historic cathedral is the Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Frombork, with the administrative see in Olsztyn and a co-cathedral there.

History

In the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship of Poland, the Catholic Church maintains the Archdiocese of Warmia (Polish: Archidiecezja warmińska, German: Erzdiözese Ermland), a Latin Church metropolitan archdiocese. The archbishop's cathedral archiepiscopal see is the Bazylika Archikatedralna Wniebowzięcia NMP i św. Andrzeja Apostoła in the town of Frombork, with a Co-Cathedral Basilica of St. James in Olsztyn.
