History
Established in 1846, the Archdiocese of Portland in Oregon (Archidioecesis Portlandensis in Oregonia) covers western Oregon in the United States and was the second Catholic archdiocese founded in the country, after Baltimore. In 2004, amid a sexual abuse scandal, it became the first archdiocese to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Saint Mary's Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Portland is its mother church, and Alexander Sample serves as archbishop.
