The Dialogues

The official dialogues, and where each stands.

The Holy See keeps standing commissions with the other Churches, with the Jewish people and with the world’s religions. This is the register: who sits across the table, what each has agreed and when it last met.

Summary

The Catholic Church holds its official conversations with other Christians through the Dicastery for Promoting Christian Unity, in an Eastern section for the Orthodox and the ancient Churches of the East and a Western section for the communities that came from the West. The Dicastery for Interreligious Dialogue holds those with the other religions, “with the exception of Judaism, competence for which belongs to the Dicastery for Promoting Christian Unity”. The Commission for Religious Relations with the Jews and the Commission for Religious Relations with Muslims were established on the same day, Oct. 22, 1974, under Pope Paul VI.

2026 is a year of finished texts in the West and of slow, careful work in the East. The Anglican-Roman Catholic International Commission approved the final draft of its second agreed statement on Oct. 5, completing ARCIC III’s mandate, and the Methodist commission approved its report on Oct. 7, and the Disciples of Christ and Pentecostal dialogues closed their phases in June. The Lutheran commission opened a sixth phase in February to prepare a joint statement for the 500th anniversary of the Augsburg Confession in 2030. With the Orthodox, the most recent plenary was at Alexandria, June 1-7, 2023, and the coordinating committee is revising a draft on infallibility before any new plenary. With the other religions, 2026 brought colloquia and a conference: Pope Leo XIV greeted the eighth colloquium with Jordan’s Royal Institute for Inter-Faith Studies on May 11, the Dicastery for Interreligious Dialogue met Buddhists, Hindus, Jains and Sikhs of Europe in Rome on June 23-24, and the first Confucian-Christian colloquium met in Seoul in August.

A dialogue’s agreed statement is the work of its commission. ARCIC’s latest, for example, “will be published in the coming months with an official Roman Catholic commentary”, and the Methodist report goes to the World Methodist Conference in Manila in 2029.

The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity

The texts for the Week of Prayer are prepared jointly by the Dicastery for Promoting Christian Unity and the Faith and Order Commission of the World Council of Churches. “The traditional period in the northern hemisphere for the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity is 18-25 January”. For 2026 the texts, on Ephesians 4:4, were drafted by the Inter-Church Relations Department of the Armenian Apostolic Church: “There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope of your calling”, and Pope Leo XIV closed the week on Jan. 25 with the words “We are one! We already are! Let us recognize it, experience it and make it visible!”. For 2027 the drafting was entrusted to the Irish Council of Churches and the Council for Ecumenism and Dialogue of the Irish Catholic Bishops’ Conference, on Luke 12:32: “Do not be afraid, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom”

The week began as the Church Unity Octave, first kept in 1908 at the initiative of the Rev. Paul Wattson, on Jan. 18-25, the days between the feasts of St. Peter and St. Paul. In 1935 Abbé Paul Couturier of France called for a “Universal Week of Prayer for Christian Unity,” praying for “the unity Christ wills by the means he wills”. The Second Vatican Council called prayer for unity, with change of heart and holiness of life, “the soul of the whole ecumenical movement,” which it named “spiritual ecumenism”. The Faith and Order Commission of the World Council of Churches and the Holy See’s office for Christian unity have prepared the texts together since 1966; they were first used in 1968, and since 1975 a local ecumenical group has prepared the first draft. The World Council of Churches announced in August 2026 that Christians in Cuba are drafting the texts for 2028, on “You give them something to eat” (Mark 6:37).
