Latin-rite diocese in Lower Austria, erected 28 January 1785 from territory of the Diocese of Passau, suffragan of the Archdiocese of Vienna. Its seat is the Cathedral of the Assumption (Dom Maria Himmelfahrt) in Sankt Poelten. Bishop Alois Schwarz, the 18th bishop of the see, was appointed 17 May 2018.
