History
One of five suffragan sees in the ecclesiastical province of the Metropolitan Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Antananarivo (the national capital) on Madagascar, the Latin Catholic Diocese of Maintirano nonetheless remains under the jurisdiction of the missionary Roman Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples. Its cathedral episcopal see, the Cathédrale de l'Assomption, dedicated to the Assumption of Mary, stands in Maintirano, Mahajanga Province.
