Erected on 30 November 2017 from territory split off the Vicariate Apostolic of Bluefields, it is a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Managua; its seat is the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Siuna, with the Pro-cathedral of Our Lord of Esquipulas.
