Erected as a diocese on 7 March 1863 and elevated to metropolitan archdiocese on 30 April 1966, its province includes the suffragan dioceses of Acarigua-Araure, Carora, Guanare and San Felipe. Its cathedral is the Cathedral of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Barquisimeto.
