Latin rite metropolitan archdiocese in Zulia state, Venezuela, with its see at Maracaibo. Erected as a diocese on 28 July 1897 and elevated to metropolitan archdiocese on 30 April 1966, its province includes the suffragan dioceses of Cabimas, El Vigia-San Carlos del Zulia and Machiques. Its cathedral is the St. Peter and St. Paul Cathedral (Catedral de San Pedro y San Pablo).

History

Maracaibo, Venezuela's second largest city with a population of approximately 2,800,000, is the seat of an archdiocese known in Latin as Archidioecesis Maracaibensis. Its territory takes in 10,761 square kilometers (4,156 square miles) of Zulia State. Ubaldo Ramón Santana Sequera has served as its Archbishop since November 2000.
