The Latin rite Diocese of Phat Diem in Ninh Binh Province, northern Vietnam, was erected as the Apostolic Vicariate of Coastal Tonkin on 15 April 1901, renamed Phat Diem in 1924, and elevated to a diocese on 24 November 1960. A suffragan of the Archdiocese of Hanoi, its cathedral is the celebrated Cathedral of the Queen of the Most Holy Rosary (Phat Diem Cathedral) in Kim Son.

History

One of the smaller Vietnamese sees by territory at 1,787 km², the Diocese of Phát Diệm (Latin: Dioecesis de Phat Diem) was declared in its present form on November 24, 1960, and is a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Hanoi. Its cathedral is Queen of the Rosary Cathedral in Kim Sơn District, Ninh Bình Province, a complex built between 1875 and 1899 that comprises four churches and one basilica alongside several parks, ponds, and grottos. By 2004 the diocese counted about 144,721 believers (15.9% of the population), 31 priests, and 65 parishes.
