Archbishop Maxim Hermaniuk, the Archbishop and Metropolitan of Winnipeg, was born on October 30, 1911, in the village of Nove Selo in the Zhovkva district of Austria-Hungary, located in what is now the Lviv region. He was born to Mykyta and Anna Hermaniuk, a family of Galician farmers.

After attending school in Kuliv, Hermaniuk entered the Redemptorist gymnasium in Zboisykh in 1927 and graduated in 1932. He began his novitiate with the Redemptorists in Holosk near Lviv, where he took his first vows on August 28, 1933. He later moved to Belgium for studies, making his perpetual vows in Louvain on September 19, 1936.

Hermaniuk studied philosophy at the Redemptorist Spiritual Seminary in Louvain and completed a four-year theology course in Bopplato in 1938. He was ordained a priest in Lviv on September 4, 1938, by Bishop Mykola Charnetsky. Although he intended to begin doctoral studies at the Angelicum in Rome, the outbreak of war led him back to the theological faculty of the Catholic University of Louvain in 1939.
