Pope Leo XIV received a delegation of students, faculty, staff, alumni, and supporters from Villanova University and the University of Notre Dame during an audience in the Paul VI Hall on October 31, 2026. The Pope welcomed the group as part of their pilgrimage to Rome, which included the university basketball teams scheduled to play against each other the following day at the PalaEur in Rome for the opening of university championships.

During the meeting, the Pope greeted Villanova President Father Peter Donohue and Notre Dame President Father Robert Dowd. He spoke about the role of sports in academic communities and society, describing athletics as a concrete way to bring people together and overcome distances created by technology. He noted that the Church views sport as a tool to promote human dignity, integral development, education, and relationships, specifically highlighting values such as fraternity, solidarity, and peace.

The Pope also addressed the personal nature of growth, stating that neither champions nor saints are born, but rather require daily practice. He encouraged athletes and supporters to move beyond competition to meet, respect, and support one another.

Pope Leo XIV met with delegations from municipalities in Central Italy affected by earthquakes ten years ago. During the audience at the Vatican Apostolic Palace on October 31, 2026, the pope called for urgent and concrete responses to accelerate the reconstruction of these areas.

The pope stated that rebuilding requires more than good intentions or disorganized volunteer work. He emphasized the need for a shared responsibility and a vision to discern how to rebuild homes and cities from the ruins. He noted that reconstruction must include not only physical buildings but also the elements that provide meaning and a foundation for the community.

In his address, the pope referenced the Book of Nehemiah and the encyclical *Magnifica Humanitas* to illustrate the importance of a communal approach to rebuilding. He encouraged the delegates to maintain hope through solidarity, commitment, and actions that transform difficult circumstances into something good.

Pope Leo XIV met with representatives from the Italian regions of Abruzzo, Marche, Lazio, and Umbria on Saturday to discuss the ongoing reconstruction following the 2016 earthquakes. During the meeting at the Apostolic Palace, the Pope called for urgent and tangible responses to assist communities that still face the consequences of the seismic activity.

He urged officials to ensure that material reconstruction is completed as quickly as possible, with a focus on safety and transparency. The Pope suggested a dual approach for the recovery process, combining a synodal method of building together with a prophetic vision that identifies the common good for the future.

The earthquake sequence began on August 24, 2016, with a 6.0 magnitude tremor that heavily damaged Amatrice, Accumoli, and Arquata del Tronto. The disaster resulted in 303 deaths and 388 injuries. The Pope noted that the destruction of historical and artistic heritage continues to cause deep pain in these communities ten years later.

Cardinal Ernest Simoni said in an interview with EWTN News In Depth that his faith sustained him after he received a death sentence from the communist government of Albania. In 1963, the government sentenced Simoni to death for celebrating a Mass for the soul of the late U.S. President John F. Kennedy.

Simoni stated that his death sentence was eventually commuted to forced labor. During his imprisonment, he experienced torture and was forced to march for 16 hours without food or water. He continued to celebrate Mass in secret despite the risk of being hanged if discovered by the authorities. After the Party of Labor of Albania dissolved in 1991, Simoni was released from manual labor and state surveillance.

Pope Francis named Simoni a cardinal in 2016, describing him as a living martyr. Simoni now travels to share his experiences and the Gospel.

Bishop Daniel Thomas, chair of the Committee on Pro-Life Activities, said the centers, maternity homes, and adoption agencies provide services to women, babies, and families. Pregnancy Help Appreciation Week was established by Heartbeat International, a network of pregnancy centers. According to a November report from the Charlotte Lozier Institute, pro-life pregnancy resource centers provided more than $452 million in medical care, education, and material support to women in crisis pregnancies and mothers with young children in 2024. Bishop Roberto Gaa attributed the decrease in priestly and religious vocations to a decline in family prayer. Speaking at the Manila Cathedral on Oct. 31, 2026, the Bishop of Novaliches said that families must create a culture of prayer to help children listen to God and discern their callings. He noted that less frequent family prayer results in fewer discovered vocations and encouraged parents to establish steadfast prayer habits with children from an early age.

Ives recounts an instance where an audience member questioned if the film was intended for children following the initial scene. The narrative also follows the McKeel family, specifically a 13-year-old girl named Pru who is tasked with caring for her one-year-old brother.

Father Kolla noted that the sunlight passing through the windows serves as a symbol for the light of Christ animating the minds and hearts of the saints.

Briefing and sources: Bishop urges Catholic families to revive family Rosary, Sunday Mass. CBCP News

Bishop Crispin Varquez of Tagbilaran urged Catholic families to pray the Rosary together and attend Sunday Mass to strengthen household bonds. During a homily on Oct. 31 at the patronal fiesta of Holy Rosary Parish in Antequera, Bohol, the bishop said excessive use of electronic devices by both parents and children is eroding family unity.

Varquez noted that family prayer is becoming less frequent because people spend more time on gadgets than on shared religious activities. He encouraged parents to set aside time to gather their children for prayer, stating that these practices help preserve love and unity within the home. The celebration also marked the conclusion of the Month of the Holy Rosary.

Archbishop Victor Bendico of Capiz reminds families to teach children to be holy

Briefing and sources: Archbishop Victor Bendico of Capiz reminds families to teach children to be holy. CBCP News

Archbishop Victor Bendico of Capiz issued a pastoral letter for All Saints’ Day on Nov. 1, advising families to teach children to embrace holiness rather than glorify evil. He cautioned against Halloween activities that portray Satan or occult practices, noting that such celebrations can influence the values and habits of children and the community.

While acknowledging that many Halloween activities are innocent recreation, the archbishop warned that some celebrations may obscure the Christian meaning of the solemnity. He encouraged parishes, Catholic schools, and religious communities to organize a Parade of Saints instead. This allows children to portray holy men and women and share their stories.

Bendico stated that these celebrations should include prayer, catechesis, and family participation. He noted that the purpose of such events is not to replace one costume party with another, but to teach children that they are called to become saints.

Briefing and sources: ‘Defend Us From Evil’: Lessons from the Inklings. Word on Fire

Henry T. Edmondson III writes that the writings of the Inklings, a group of writers based at Oxford University during the first half of the twentieth century, offer principles regarding spiritual warfare.

In an article for Word on Fire, Edmondson notes that while the group did not provide systematic teaching on the subject, their prose and fiction help explain and defend the Christian life. He suggests that revisiting their publications at the end of October provides an opportunity to examine their perspectives on spiritual malevolence. Edmondson observes that the tensions between the various members' contributions can also be instructive for understanding these themes.

Briefing and sources: A Prison Chaplain's Expriencewith Exorcism, Deliverance and Inner Freedom. Rome Reports

Fr. John Farao, OFM CONV, a prison chaplain, has incorporated deliverance ministry into his work with inmates following specialized studies in Rome. After completing a course on exorcism, Fr. Farao returned to his chaplaincy to perform minor exorcisms and provide spiritual healing.

Fr. Farao noted that his ministry often involves encounters with men who show fear during prayer. He observed that even men involved in gang violence sometimes reacted with visible intimidation when he prayed.

The Church requires that a priest receive express permission from a bishop to perform a solemn exorcism and must be properly trained to recognize demonic activity.
