Alert from the Diocese of Trenton on marriage validity

The Diocese of Trenton has issued an alert advising Catholic couples to verify that their wedding officiant has the official faculties required by Church law. The diocese warned that certain ministers are offering weddings and other sacraments online or through other media without having the authority to perform them.

According to Canon 1108, a marriage is valid only if a baptized Catholic exchanges vows in the presence of the local bishop, a parish priest, or a priest or deacon delegated by the diocese, along with at least two witnesses. The diocese advises all parties planning a marriage to ask the proposed officiant if he has been granted official faculties by the diocese where the wedding will occur. If the officiant lacks these faculties or provides a confusing response, the Church will not consider the marriage valid.

Individuals with questions or concerns regarding marriage validity can consult their local parish or the Chancery of the Diocese of Trenton.
