Basílica de San Pedro completes restoration of mosaics in Capilla Clementina

St. Peter's Basilica has finished restoring the mosaics in the dome of the Clementine Chapel. The Fabbrica di San Pietro, the body responsible for maintaining the basilica, announced the completion of the project, which took place between May 2025 and September 2026.

The restoration covered 371 square meters of mosaics created between 1601 and 1604 based on designs by the painter Cristofano Roncalli, also known as Il Pomarancio. Workers also restored the accompanying stucco decorations to ensure the stability of the entire structure.

The project began after routine inspections by the Fabbrica di San Pietro identified damage caused by the natural aging of materials and previous repairs. Before the physical work started, technicians conducted a diagnostic campaign using photographic documentation, laboratory material analysis, and digital mapping of damaged areas. Scaffolding installed in January 2025 allowed for a close examination of the surfaces to locate specific issues. The completion of these works coincides with the 400th anniversary of the consecration of the basilica.
