Bishop of Chimbote to establish first Polish martyrs' sanctuary

First source report

Catholic IntelligenceUpdated 1 min read

The bishop of Chimbote issued a decree on October 20 establishing the church in Pariacoto, Peru, as a sanctuary dedicated to Blessed Zbigniew Strzałkowski and Blessed Michał Tomaszek. This marks the first sanctuary in the world dedicated to these two Polish martyrs.

The two Polish Franciscans served in the Pariacoto parish before they were killed by terrorists in 1991. Father Jan Maria Szewek, OFMConv, told Vatican News that the sanctuary will serve as a great thanksgiving to God for their lives.

A formal ceremony to announce the sanctuary is scheduled for December 5, which marks the 11th anniversary of the beatification of the two missionaries.
