Bishop of Larantuka reports solidarity after earthquake

Bishop Yohanes Hans Monteiro reported that the Diocese of Larantuka is experiencing significant solidarity following a 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck Flores on August 15. While damage in Larantuka was relatively limited, Monteiro said the community remains shaken by fear and uncertainty.

The earthquake occurred in a region already dealing with volcanic activity. Monteiro noted that some faithful were already internally displaced due to a volcanic eruption in Larantuka two years ago, and the volcano continues to pose a threat. The Church is working to support these displaced people through Caritas Indonesia and local diocesan relief efforts.
