Cardinal Tobin Reflects on Amoris Laetitia

Cardinal Joseph Tobin said Pope Leo XIV intends to recover the truth and beauty of the apostolic exhortation Amoris Laetitia. In a column published by the Archdiocese of Newark, Tobin noted that the Pope aims to apply the teaching of his predecessor, Pope Francis, to current situations.

Tobin wrote that public attention toward the document during its tenth anniversary has focused almost exclusively on controversial issues. Some critics claim the text promotes a softening of Church discipline regarding divorce and remarriage. Tobin stated that a prayerful reading of the entire document shows this is a misunderstanding.

The remarks follow a series of conversations convened by Pope Leo XIV from October 7 to 14 to reflect on love, marriage, and family life. During an address to bishops at the Vatican on October 7, Pope Leo emphasized the document's affirmations of traditional understandings regarding the sacramental significance and indissoluble nature of marriage.
