Caritas Colombia responds to earthquake
First source report
Caritas Colombia is assisting families in rebuilding homes following a 7.4 magnitude earthquake that struck western Colombia on August 10. The earthquake, centered near San José del Palmar in the Chocó department, caused more than 100 deaths and damaged over 1,500 homes according to government figures.
Father Diego, director of Caritas Colombiana, stated that while initial relief efforts focused on food, shelter, and sleeping supplies, the current priority has shifted to house repairs. Many families are attempting to rebuild damaged structures or start new construction where homes were destroyed.
The tremors caused building collapses in Cali and damaged the cathedral in Manizales. Other affected areas include Quibdó and Pereira. The earthquake also damaged schools, roads, health services, and water supplies. In remote regions, families face additional challenges due to existing poverty and armed conflict.
