Catholic Church in Democratic Republic of Congo responds to Ebola outbreak

First source report

Catholic IntelligenceUpdated 1 min read

Catholic communities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo are providing emergency assistance, welcoming displaced people, and raising awareness about a new Ebola outbreak. Fr. Olivier Ndondo, the provincial superior of the Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament in the DRC, told Aid to the Church in Need that the Church is working to support those affected despite limited resources and insecurity caused by armed conflict and rebel groups.

The outbreak has spread to eight provinces, including North Ubangi, and has resulted in more than 9,000 cases and 4,000 deaths. Official figures through October 14 reported 9,277 cases and 4,478 deaths. This outbreak, caused by the Bundibugyo strain, is spreading faster than previous epidemics.

Fr. Ndondo noted that the war in the eastern part of the country makes it difficult to enter certain areas to provide aid. He also highlighted challenges regarding funeral rites, as the physical contact required during these ceremonies makes it difficult to contain the highly contagious disease.
