Diocese of Venice commemorates 25 years since 9/11 terror attacks

The Diocese of Venice partnered with Sarasota County Emergency Services to hold a commemoration at Sarasota National Cemetery marking 25 years since the September 11 terror attacks. The event featured speakers including Johnny Schroeder, a retired New York firefighter from Engine 10, who described his experience arriving at the World Trade Center and his ongoing health struggles from inhaling toxic dust at Ground Zero.

Survivors and first responders spoke about the importance of marking the anniversary to honor those who died and to thank military members, veterans, and first responders.

The ceremony included an opening invocation by Father Jacob Gwynn of St. John the Evangelist Parish in Naples. Father Jiobani Batista and Deacon Humberto Alvia of St. Jude Parish in Sarasota offered condolences in English and Spanish, with additional participation from priests and deacons from St. Martha and Incarnation parishes.
