Diocese of Saint-Etienne presents liturgical vestments exhibition

The Diocese of Saint-Etienne held an exhibition of liturgical vestments and objects at the church in Saint-Médard-en-Forez on Saturday, September 19. The display featured items discovered in the church sacristy.

Christiane Jakob presented the history of the garments and accessories, which were displayed across four chapels: the baptistery, the confessional, the Blessed Sacrament, and a fourth chapel. The vestments likely date from the early twentieth century, with the piece in the baptistery chapel confirmed to be from the first quarter of the century. Other items are currently undergoing dating.

The exhibition highlighted the textile artistry of the pieces, which include materials such as velvet, silk, satin, lace, and gold or silver threads. Jakob explained the meaning behind the specific colors, shapes, and embroidered patterns. These items were produced either in religious workshops or by specialized artisans and houses to support the dignity of liturgical ceremonies.
