US, Denmark, Greenland sign security agreement
First source report
The United States, Denmark, and Greenland signed a security agreement on Sept. 22 that expands the U.S. military presence on the island. The deal amends a 1951 document and allows for the modernization and expansion of the Pituffik Space base, as well as the creation of new installations at Narsarsuaq and Mestersvig. The agreement also grants the U.S. free overflight, overland, and undersea access across Greenland and restricts foreign investment to the European Union, NATO, and NATO-aligned nations.
Father Tomaž Majcen, a Conventual Franciscan serving at Christ the King Church in Nuuk, said the local Catholic community views the agreement with a mix of relief and concern. He noted that dialogue provides some relief compared to previous confrontations. The island has approximately 56,000 residents, including about 500 Catholics.
