French presidential campaign tests durability of support for Ukraine

Geopolitics expert Aurélien Duchêne stated that a campaign platform advocating for withdrawal from NATO and ending support for Ukraine is unlikely to succeed in France.

During a meeting on September 19, President Emmanuel Macron met with major political leaders to analyze the international situation. While some politicians used the meeting to discuss taxes and fuel prices, Gabriel Attal reported that Macron spoke seriously about direct threats to France following briefings from foreign and domestic intelligence agencies.

Duchêne noted that political leaders, including Marine Tondelier and Raphaël Glucksmann, appeared concerned by evidence suggesting potential operations against France in the coming months. One discussed scenario involved the defense industry. Following the meeting, Macron announced he would call on prefects to protect key infrastructure and facilities. Government officials are reportedly warning major military equipment producers to prepare for such threats.
