Marist Brother Rogério Renato Mateucci dies in Arizona accident

Marist Brother Rogério Renato Mateucci, rector of the Pontifical Catholic University of Paraná, died on Oct. 16 following an accident in Arizona. The Pontifical Catholic University of Paraná announced that Mateucci suffered a head injury at the Taliesin West historic home near Scottsdale when high winds tore a piece of roofing from the structure during a walking tour.

The university in Curitiba, Brazil, canceled two days of classes following his death and held a memorial Mass on Oct. 19. Mateucci had served as rector since 2021 and previously held roles as vice rector and a member of the school's board of directors.

The Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation expressed condolences to his family and stated the property would remain closed until further notice. Paulo Mussi Augusto, an associate vice president at Kent State University in Ohio, noted that Mateucci had delivered a commencement keynote address at the school in May 2025.
