Southern African Catholic Bishops' Conference establishes Council of Priests

The Southern African Catholic Bishops' Conference established the Council of Priests (COP) to improve collaboration between bishops and priests across the region. The new body replaces the former Southern African Council of Priests, which Father Alex Beukes, the COP vice chairperson, said lacked sufficient collaboration and did not provide enough space for priests to address ministry issues within their dioceses.

During a strategic planning meeting held from September 9 to 11, Father Beukes stated that the COP serves as a synodal body where priests can share experiences and concerns. The council aims to help bishops and priests work together to solve fundamental issues affecting the priesthood in various Southern African dioceses. The meeting focused on establishing priorities and strengthening priestly communion, stewardship, and mission.
