SOUTH SUDAN: Conflict Leaves Yei Catholics Waiting Years for Sacraments, Bishop Says

Bishop Alex Lodiong Sakor said insecurity, poor roads, and a shortage of priests are preventing the Catholic Diocese of Yei in South Sudan from providing regular pastoral services. Some Catholics have gone up to a year without visits from priests due to these disruptions.

The bishop reported that armed men in rural areas have created fear among pastoral workers traveling to remote villages. He noted that two priests were allegedly harassed and taken into the bush to be extorted for money before being released. Catechists in these communities have also faced repeated questioning by armed groups regarding their presence in the area.

These safety concerns have discouraged some missionary congregations from responding to the diocese's requests for assistance. Despite these risks, Bishop Lodiong said the diocese continues to attempt to reach its faithful as part of its duty to the people.
