Archbishop Shane Mackinlay wrote that the spirit of Assisi serves as a call to peace as the Church marks the 40th anniversary of Pope John Paul II's historic meeting with world religious leaders.

In October 1986, Pope John Paul II invited leaders from various religions to Assisi to fast and pray for peace. Archbishop Mackinlay noted that this gathering broke a centuries-old pattern of religious separation.
