Vatican to submit 'Green Lava' for Oscar nomination

The Holy See plans to submit the documentary Green Lava for an Oscar nomination. The 39-minute film recounts the life of Giacomo Mattivi, a 25-year-old Italian man living with Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

Co-director Lia Beltrami told ACI Prensa that the film portrays Mattivi's daily life and the physical deterioration caused by the disease, which has left him using a wheelchair and a ventilator. The documentary also depicts the death of Mattivi's older brother from the same condition. Beltrami noted that the story explores themes of suffering and resilience.

Catholic World Report stated that the Vatican hopes the short documentary will inspire people to rely on faith and family to endure difficult trials if it reaches the Oscar running.
