Pope Leo XIV has modified two canons of the Codex Canonum Ecclesiarum Orientalium, allowing the Synod of Bishops to remove a patriarch with the Pope's assent. The changes aim to strengthen the role of synods in Eastern Catholic Churches. The Motu Proprio Mutua Concordia clarifies the procedure for removing a patriarch in case of a rupture in ecclesial harmony.
