Leo XIV appoints bishop to Chinese diocese vacant 80 years

Pope Leo XIV has appointed Bishop Paul Liu Honggang to the Diocese of Datong, China, a diocese that has been vacant for 80 years. The appointment was announced by the Vatican press office on August 31, 2026. This is the 19th bishop appointed under the provisional pastoral agreement between China and the Holy See.
