Since its establishment in 1951 the Diocese of Wollongong, a Latin Church jurisdiction and suffragan of the metropolitan Archdiocese of Sydney, has covered the Illawarra and Southern Highlands regions of New South Wales. The cathedra of the Bishop of Wollongong, currently Brian Mascord, stands in St Francis Xavier's Cathedral, Wollongong.
