Latin-rite diocese on the Rio Negro in Amazonas state, Brazil, with the highest percentage of indigenous population of any Brazilian diocese. Established 1 May 1925 as the Territorial Prelature of Rio Negro, elevated to a diocese 30 October 1980 and renamed Sao Gabriel da Cachoeira in 1981; it is a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Manaus. Its cathedral is the Catedral Sao Gabriel.

History

Seated in the city of São Gabriel da Cachoeira, this Brazilian diocese (Latin: Dioecesis Cachoëirensis) belongs to the ecclesiastical province of Manaus. Its bishop is Mgr Edson Taschetto Damian, named on March 4th, 2009 and blessed on May 24th, 2009.
