History

Pope Pius VI erected the Diocese of Nancy and Toul (Latin: Dioecesis Nanceiensis et Tullensis; French: Diocèse de Nancy et de Toul) on 17 December 1777, after a considerable political struggle involving Louis XV, Louis XVI, and the Dukes of Lorraine. A Latin Church diocese of the Catholic Church in France, it stands as a suffragan within the ecclesiastical province of the metropolitan Archdiocese of Besançon.
