History

Established in 1742, the Diocese of Saint-Claude (Latin: Dioecesis Sancti Claudii; French: Diocèse de Saint-Claude) is a Latin Church ecclesiastical territory of the Catholic Church in France whose bounds match the civil department of Jura. The city lies 62 km (39 mi) north-northwest of Geneva and 120 km (75 mi) south of Besançon. Once a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Lyon, the diocese now belongs to the ecclesiastical province of the metropolitan Archdiocese of Besançon. Its cathedra is Saint-Claude Cathedral, in the episcopal see of Saint-Claude, Jura.
