History
Pope Pius IX erected the Archdiocese of San Francisco on July 29, 1853. A Latin Church ecclesiastical territory or diocese of the Catholic Church serving the northern California region of the United States (Latin: Archdiœcesis Sancti Francisci; Spanish: Arquidiócesis de San Francisco), it has for its mother church the Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Assumption.
