Apostolato del mare to hold national conference in Bari

The Apostolate of the Sea is holding a national conference in Bari on October 9 and 10 to discuss how war affects maritime security, the economy, and labor rights. Held at the Sala Odegitria of the Cathedral, the event uses the theme of the sea for a disarmed and disarming peace.

Father Bruno Bignami, director of the national office for the apostolate of the sea, said the conference addresses how interconnected wars block global trade, force ships into longer journeys, and close ports and canals. He noted these disruptions increase the cost of living and harm the working conditions and contracts of maritime workers. The Church intends to support those who are currently neglected or overlooked.

The program includes discussions based on the CEI note, Educare a una pace disarmata e disarmante, to ensure peace protects the dignity of maritime work. The conference opens Friday, October 9, with remarks from Bari Mayor Vito Leccese and Sergio Liardo, general commander of the Capitanerie di porto. Father Enzo Severo will moderate a session on the consequences of conflict, and Vincenzo Buonomo, rector of the Pontificia Università Urbaniana, will speak regarding the role of the sea.
