Pope Leo XIV sent a personal condolence message to Father Gabriel Romanelli, the pastor of Holy Family Parish in Gaza, following an Israeli airstrike that killed five people. The strike, which occurred in the early hours of October 3, hit a residential building in Gaza City and killed Maysa Khader Ibrahim Abu Daoud and her daughter, Mary Hafez Michel Najjar.
In a video update shared on October 4, Father Romanelli read the message from the pope. Writing a lament from Psalm 13, the pope asked how long the suffering would last and stated he was praying for the victims, their families, and everyone in Gaza. He thanked the pastor for remaining with the parish and the people seeking peace.
Ramzi Khouri, head of the Higher Presidential Committee for Church Affairs in Palestine, confirmed the deaths and noted that the two women had spent their time serving parishioners and displaced people sheltering at the Holy Family Church.

Pope Leo XIV released a video message for the 100th World Mission Sunday, marking the centenary of the celebration established by his predecessor, Pope Pius XI.
The theme for this year, "One in Christ, United in Mission," invites the Church to reflect on strengthening unity while following Christ and fulfilling the responsibility to share the Gospel with all people. The Pope noted that through Baptism, every person becomes a member of the Body of Christ with a unique role in the work of salvation.
In his message, the Pope expressed gratitude to those who have supported World Mission Sunday over the years. He shared that prayers and contributions from the faithful supported his own missionary work in Peru and helped prepare him to serve as an Augustinian missionary. He noted that the annual celebration was originally intended to help every diocese and parish understand the missionary task, increase prayer for evangelization, encourage missionary vocations, and support the Pontifical Mission Societies.

Bishop J. Mark Spalding of Nashville expressed opposition to capital punishment following a failed execution attempt at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution on September 30. Two doses of pentobarbital failed to kill Christa Pike, a 50-year-old inmate convicted of a 1995 murder.
Spalding stated that no execution can be considered humane and noted that medicine is intended to heal, relieve suffering, and preserve life. He said the lack of transparency regarding execution procedures raises questions about the reliability of drugs used and the training of those performing the medical interventions. He added that withholding this information prevents lawyers from seeking meaningful judicial review of the methods used.
The bishop, who previously joined the bishops of Memphis and Knoxville in asking Governor Bill Lee to spare Pike, reaffirmed his stance against the death penalty while acknowledging the victim's family. Following the incident, Governor Lee suspended all executions for the remainder of the year and ordered an independent investigation.

Archbishop Mitchell Thomas Rozanski and the Archdiocese of St. Louis filed a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri on Oct. 5 against the federal government and a local sheriff. The suit alleges that visitation policies at the Ste. Genevieve County Detention Center prevent Catholic priests from administering the sacraments of confession and Communion to migrants held by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
The archdiocese claims the facility's no-contact policy requires clergy to speak with detainees through a glass partition, preventing the administration of sacraments. The lawsuit also states that priests are barred from saying Mass and are limited to a single four-hour visit per week. The filing notes that while lawyers and consular officials are permitted to visit under more permissive rules, the archdiocese's requests for accommodations were refused.
The Ste. Genevieve County Detention Center has held approximately 3,000 migrants since mid-2025 and currently houses about 150 detainees. In a statement, the archdiocese said the deprivation of these sacraments imposes real and immediate harm on both priests and Catholic detainees.
The Department of Homeland Security rejected the claims in a statement on Oct. 6, disputing that jail policies interfere with religious practice and asserting that detainees have access to Catholic sacraments.

Bishop Hervé Gosselin of Angoulême and Bishop Olivier de Cagny of Évreux are calling for prayer and dialogue in France as nationwide protests and riots continue. The unrest follows the Sept. 25–28 apostolic visit of Pope Leo XIV to the country.
Bishop Gosselin noted on Oct. 2 that the peace and serenity experienced during the papal visit have been replaced by a difficult reality. The riots began in the Paris region on Sept. 17 and spread across the country after Sept. 28. By Oct. 6, the unrest forced the closure or disruption of nearly 900 of France's 3,700 public high schools.
Bishop de Cagny described the violence as unnecessary, though he acknowledged that many young people face significant fears regarding unemployment, war, climate change, and social isolation. He urged renewed dialogue to end the confrontations.
According to the Ministry of Justice, reported by France Info, more than 5,000 people have been taken into police custody, and several hundred police officers have been injured. The protests involve students, political and union leaders, and rioters who have used fireworks, cobblestones, and fire during demonstrations.

Pope Leo XIV addressed the dangers of prioritizing efficiency over human connection in his first encyclical, Magnifica humanitas. The Pope noted that when efficiency serves as the primary measure of value, people may view themselves as projects to be optimized instead of individuals called to relationship and communion.
The Rule of St. Benedict offers a framework for finding meaning through relationship and communion. Established by St. Benedict of Nursia following the collapse of Roman social and economic structures, the Rule provides guidance on listening intently, practicing the liturgy of work, and sharing silence. The Rule emphasizes the importance of listening with the ears of the heart to connect with God.

Investigators at the former St. Mary’s Mother and Baby Home in Tuam, Ireland, reported that all 109 sets of remains recovered during the ongoing excavation show evidence of being buried in coffins. A technical update issued Oct. 2 contradicts previous claims that the remains of children at the site had been dumped.
The excavation, which began in July 2025, is taking place at a site believed to be the final resting place for nearly 800 infants. The Bon Secour Sisters operated the home in County Galway on behalf of the Irish government from 1925 until 1961.
The site became a subject of international controversy in 2014 after historian Catherine Corless identified death certificates for 796 children that lacked corresponding burial records. A 2017 investigation found human remains in underground chambers within an unused sewage system, leading to media reports accusing the sisters of dumping remains in a septic tank. Corless previously stated she never used that term.

Archbishop Edward Weisenburger of the Archdiocese of Detroit supports the use of poll chaplains to protect voting rights during the 2026 midterm elections. Speaking at the Participation, Dignity, and Elections conference on Sept. 16, Weisenburger encouraged Catholics to be proactive in the democratic process by using nonpartisan poll watchers and chaplains.
Poll chaplains, also known as peacekeepers, serve in an unofficial capacity outside polling locations. These volunteers aim to provide nonpartisan election information, mediate tensions, and document instances of voter intimidation or attempts to infringe on voting rights.
Weisenburger stated that the Church has a theological mandate to assist voters, particularly in areas facing voter suppression or gerrymandering. While the role of a poll chaplain is not an official position within the Church or the government, Catholic organizations are currently participating in efforts to recruit and train individuals for these peacekeeping roles.

Frédéric Manns describes the biblical city of Magdala and its connection to Mary Magdalene in a feature for L’Osservatore Romano. In his work, Raccontando la Bibbia, Manns depicts Magdala as a fortified city on the Sea of Galilee where Jesus visited a newly inaugurated synagogue to preach the Good News of the Kingdom of God.
Manns suggests that Jesus may have encountered Mary Magdalene on a pier in the port. He describes the meeting as a moment when the luxurious boat of the wealthy Mary Magdalene crossed paths with the humble boat used by the Apostles during the period of preaching known as the Galilean Spring. The feature notes that the Gospel of Luke identifies Mary Magdalene as one of the women who accompanied Jesus after she was healed of seven demons and various infirmities.

Pope Leo XIV met with French bishops in Lourdes on Sunday, September 27, to encourage the growth of faith in France. During the meeting, the Pope told the bishops to use missionary creativity and courage to address modern challenges and human errors. He advised them to acknowledge failings with truth and to heal wounds through charity.
The Pope stated that the Church has a right to be heard in the public square due to its historical role in building French society. He urged the bishops to defend the rights of the Church to evangelize, educate, and worship publicly. He noted that the Church must act as a sign of renewal as the world faces rising violence, polarization, and a decline in fraternity.
To renew the mission in France, Pope Leo XIV said the only roadmap is to make Jesus Christ known and loved authentically. He also encouraged the bishops to provide young people with doctrinal clarity regarding the Gospel and to work with them to pursue what is true, good, and beautiful.

Pope Leo XIV visited the Maison Bakhita center in Paris on Saturday, September 26, to meet with migrants and refugees receiving social integration services. During his visit to the facility, which is run by the Archdiocese of Paris, the Pope thanked the staff and volunteers for providing support and friendship to those assisted by the center.
The Pope cited the center's patron, Saint Josephine Bakhita, as an example of how to recognize the dignity of every person. He noted that women play a fundamental role in building a civilization of love that serves as an alternative to cultures that cause loneliness and community division.
Pope Leo XIV stated that the history of the Church and humanity is shaped by those who build trust and peace rather than those who seek to dominate others. He described the poor as the flesh of Christ and encouraged people to share both spiritual and material gifts, noting that everyone has something to give regardless of their wealth.

More than 13,000 adults were baptized in France during Easter last year, marking a 28 percent increase compared to 2025. This figure represents more than triple the number of baptisms recorded in the country ten years ago.
During a visit to the Catholic University of Paris on September 26, Pope Leo XIV met with several newly baptized members and catechumens. Robin, a 24-year-old student baptized in 2023, told L'Osservatore Romano that the Church in France is transitioning from an inherited faith to one that is chosen. He noted that while post-World War II society attempted to build a culture indifferent to God, many young people today are seeking a relationship with God. Robin, who was raised in an Evangelical Protestant family, said he was drawn to the Catholic Church by its communal dimension of faith.

André Finot, the communications manager for the charity Friends of Notre-Dame de Paris, reflected on the cathedral's reconstruction and the fire that destroyed its roof and spire. Finot, who served as the cathedral's communications manager for nearly a decade and witnessed the fire firsthand, has spent the last six years following the work of architects and craftsmen during the restoration process.
The charity was founded in 2016 following discussions between Finot, art history professor Andrew Tallon, and then-Archbishop of Paris Cardinal André Vingt-Trois. Tallon had warned that the cathedral was in poor condition and risked collapsing within ten years if funds were not raised to save it. The organization currently works to preserve the historic site.
