Bishop Jorge Carrión of Puno dies

Bishop Jorge Pedro Carrión Pavlich died at age 76 while hospitalized in a Lima clinic. His death was announced to the faithful on Sunday, November 1, during Mass at the Sanctuary of the Virgin of Candelaria in Puno.

Carrión served as the bishop of the Diocese of Puno for more than 24 years after being appointed by Pope John Paul II in May 2000. He was a priest for 50 years and had worked in the Puno diocese since 1991.

His death follows the passing of Archbishop Richard Daniel Alarcón Urrutia of Cusco, who died on Friday, October 30. These deaths occur shortly before Pope Leo XIV is scheduled to visit Peru from November 11 to 16.

The Peruvian Episcopal Conference issued a statement of condolence, joining the Church of Puno and the family in prayer. Carrión's remains were held at the funerary chapel of the Sanctuary of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Monterrico. He is scheduled for a funeral Mass on Tuesday, November 3, with burial on Wednesday, November 4, in his birthplace of Tarma.
