    Angelus · November 1, 2026

Pope Leo XIV led the Angelus prayer on the Solemnity of All Saints on November 1, 2026. Speaking from the Apostolic Palace window to the faithful in St. Peter's Square, the Pope described the saints as an innumerable family of men and women who made their lives a gift to God and their neighbors.

The Pope noted that the Church celebrates both formally recognized saints and the countless others known to God. He described the saints as being poor in spirit, meek, and peacemakers who find consolation in prayer and are protected by God. He stated that holiness cannot be reduced to a calculation because of the good the saints spread throughout the world.

During his reflection, the Pope used an expression from Pope Benedict XVI's encyclical *Spe Salvi*, describing the saints' desire for the "ocean of infinite love."

Following the prayer, the Pope addressed the situation in Oleshky, Ukraine. He called the recent completion of a mission to transfer residents to unoccupied Ukrainian territories a worthy gesture of humanity. He expressed hope that such actions would increase the will for dialogue and lead to concrete peace initiatives.

Pope Leo XIV said Sunday that holiness is a universal vocation for everyone rather than an achievement for a select group. Speaking from the Apostolic Palace window during the Angelus prayer on the Solemnity of All Saints, the pope addressed the faithful gathered in St. Peter’s Square.

He stated that the number of saints cannot be measured by calculation, as the good they spread throughout the world is immeasurable. Quoting Pope Benedict XVI’s encyclical *Spe Salvi*, Leo XIV said that saints follow different paths to holiness while longing for an ocean of infinite love.

Leo XIV described the saints as a sign of the Kingdom of God that is already present among people. He said their actions and choices of love overcome the greed and arrogance of evil. The pope characterized the saints as people who are gentle in the face of violence, hungry for justice, and ready to forgive through the mercy of God.

Other concerns included failing to complete goals, social isolation, judgment from others, and the challenges of adulthood.

Philip Kosloski writes that holiness is not limited to a small group of people, but is a gift from God intended for everyone in their daily lives.

Writing for Aleteia on All Saints Day, Kosloski notes that while the Church presents men and women of heroic virtue as examples to imitate, many people feel excluded from such sanctity. He explains that God does not require individuals to replicate the specific lives of figures like Mother Teresa. Instead, holiness is something to be received from God rather than a quality built by human effort.

Briefing and sources: No, a new manuscript proving the Resurrection has not been found. Aleteia

Claims that a newly discovered 2,000-year-old manuscript containing an account of the Resurrection of Jesus has been found are untrue, according to a report by Aleteia.

The reports stem from a preprint study by Spanish researcher Jesús Fernández-Pedrera Correa. The study has not yet undergone peer review. Rather than presenting a new document, the researcher compared four existing versions of a passage known as the Testimonium Flavianum. This passage is part of the Jewish Antiquities, a work written by the historian Flavius Josephus around AD 93–94.

The Testimonium Flavianum is a section of text that scholars have debated for over a century. It mentions Jesus and his crucifixion, including a line stating that he appeared alive on the third day as foretold by prophets. No previously unknown document has surfaced.

Briefing and sources: Africa surpasses Europe in Catholic population; Church leaders highlight missionary role. Catholic News Agency

Africa's Catholic population has surpassed that of Europe, according to the latest statistics from Agenzia Fides. The data, drawn from the Church's Book of Statistics through December 31, 2024, shows Africa has 288.3 million Catholics, while Europe has 287.2 million. Africa now holds the second-largest Catholic population globally, following the Americas.

The African continent recorded the largest increase in Catholics, adding 7.58 million people. This growth exceeded the 6.99 million increase reported in the Americas. Total global Catholic numbers reached 1.4 billion, an increase of 15.8 million from the previous year.

Catholic leaders in Africa told ACI Africa that families, catechists, pastoral presence, and missionary witness contributed to this growth. Leaders described the expansion as an opportunity to share faith, vocations, and missionary experience with the universal Church.

Africa also saw the largest increase in priests, adding 1,676, compared to a worldwide net increase of 425. The continent was the only one to report growth in seminarians, with an increase of 786.

Bishop Joseph Galea-Curmi welcomed Father Martin Borg as the new parish priest of Imqabba during a Mass celebrated on the Solemnity of All Saints.

During his homily, Bishop Galea-Curmi noted that the celebration held special significance because the Imqabba parish is dedicated to Mary, Mother of Jesus and Mother of the Church. He welcomed Father Borg at the start of his ministry and prayed for him.

The bishop stated that the parish should be a community where people love, forgive, respect, and work together for the common good. He said that the pursuit of holiness is visible in how people speak to one another, how they handle disagreement, how they welcome those who are different, and how they seek reconciliation.

Briefing and sources: You are Called to be a Saint! | One-Minute Homily. The Jesuit Post

Jackson Graham, SJ, reflected on the universal vocation to holiness in a homily for the Solemnity of All Saints.

Graham noted that the Catholic Church includes saints from all walks of life and backgrounds. He cited a teaching from the late Pope Francis that being a saint is a vocation for everyone rather than a privilege for a few.

The homily stated that all people, including the young, the elderly, students, and teachers, are called to follow Jesus. Graham described saints as those who persevere and return to Christ despite having sinned. He encouraged people not to fear holiness, noting that Jesus calls individuals to saintliness through their specific gifts and states of life.

Briefing and sources: P. Carlos riflette su vent’anni di esperienza in Africa occidentale. Società delle Missioni AfricanePerspective

Father Carlos shared reflections on his 20 years of experience in West Africa, discussing the relationship between the Gospel and African cultures. Writing for the Society of African Missions, he noted that spirituality in these regions permeates all aspects of life and society, rather than being separate from the physical or material world.

He observed that while early European missionaries often labeled African spirituality as animism or dismissed it as irrational, the Second Vatican Council suggests the Gospel can adopt the spiritual gifts of every nation. He noted that the Word of Christ is intended to strengthen and complete existing cultures.

He suggested that applying different cultural codes to the Gospel can make it difficult for those raised in those traditions to understand. He expressed concern that Christian rites in Africa sometimes risk disconnecting new converts from their cultural framework.

Pope Leo XIV has declared Archbishop Fulton Sheen blessed, establishing December 9 as his feast day. The announcement, which marks the anniversary of Sheen's death, was made during a Mass on September 24 at The Dome at America’s Center.

During the ceremony, Cardinal Luis Tagle, the pro-prefect of the Dicastery for Evangelization, read the papal decree in Latin. Bishop Louis Tylka of Peoria, Illinois, read the decree in English. The Mass included a procession of approximately 1,000 priests, 89 bishops, and hundreds of deacons and seminarians.

Pope Leo XIV prayed evening prayer at the restored Notre-Dame Cathedral on September 25. He was the first pope to enter the cathedral since its reconstruction following the 2019 fire that destroyed the roof, nave, and spire.

During his homily, the pope noted that the cathedral serves as more than a monument and represents a living center of civilization. He stated that the collective effort to rebuild the structure shows the heart of the people. He told the gathered clergy and religious that the reborn cathedral should encourage them to pursue holiness and their daily missions.

The prayer service was the first meeting between the pope and the Catholic Church of Paris during his visit to France from September 25 to 28. Notre-Dame Cathedral reopened in December 2024, approximately five years after the fire.

Latin Mass Permissions Steady from Pope Francis to Pope Leo XIV

Briefing and sources: Latin Mass Permissions Steady from Pope Francis to Pope Leo XIV. Adoremus

Thirty-four dioceses received permission from the Vatican to celebrate the Traditional Latin Mass in parish churches during 2025, according to the Summarium Decretorum for 2025. This total matches the number of permissions granted in 2024 and remains consistent with the 35 permissions issued in 2022. The United States accounted for 24 of these 34 decrees.

The annual summary from the Dicastery for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments shows that the Vatican's handling of these requests remained steady during the transition between popes. Seven decrees were issued during the pontificate of Pope Francis, who died on April 21, 2025. The remaining 27 decrees were issued following the election of Pope Leo XIV on May 8.

Under the 2021 motu proprio Traditionis Custodes, diocesan bishops must obtain permission from the Holy See to authorize celebrations using the 1962 Roman Missal in parish churches. Most of the 2025 decrees, totaling 29 of the 34, renewed existing permissions for an additional two years for established communities.

Father Mike Schmitz began his Parables tour on Oct. 30 at an auditorium in downtown St. Paul. During the one-man show, Schmitz discussed how Jesus used approximately 40 parables to communicate truths about God and human life.

The presentation included an interactive segment where Schmitz invited audience members to share words about people they love.

Schmitz is the director of Youth and Young Adult Ministry for the Diocese of Duluth and the chaplain for the Newman Center at the University of Minnesota Duluth. He is also known for hosting The Bible in a Year and Catechism in a Year podcasts. For the past two years, he has traveled nationally and internationally to deliver this keynote message and participate in question-and-answer sessions with audiences.
