Bishops conclude Vatican family meeting as Pope Leo XIV recovers in hospital

Bishops and Church leaders concluded a weeklong Vatican meeting on marriage and family life on October 14, though the final synthesis report remains unpublished due to the hospitalization of Pope Leo XIV. The gathering, held from October 7 to 14, marked the 10th anniversary of Pope Francis’ 2016 document, Amoris Laetitia, and focused on how local churches implement its teachings.

The meeting brought together 115 presidents of bishops' conferences, heads of Eastern Catholic churches, family ministry experts, and lay people. Participants discussed challenges such as declining marriage and baptism rates, poverty, migration, divorce, and the impact of social media. Archbishop Charles Scicluna of Malta stated that the meeting reinforced a commitment to place families at the center of the Church's pastoral mission by listening to them before passing judgment. Jesuit Father Giacomo Costa, an organizer, noted that accompaniment was a central theme throughout the discussions.

The publication of the meeting's final report is delayed because Pope Leo XIV requested to review the findings personally during his recovery. The pope underwent surgery on October 13 to remove cancerous tissue from his lung. In a message to participants read on October 14, the pope said he would read the results of their work and offer his own reflections in due course.
