Cardinal Tobin discusses the tenth anniversary of Amoris Laetitia

Cardinal Joseph William Tobin participated in a series of conversations from October 7 to 14 to reflect on marriage and family life. These discussions were convened by Pope Leo XIV to mark the 10th anniversary of the apostolic exhortation Amoris Laetitia, written by Pope Francis.

Tobin stated that public attention toward the document has often focused on controversial issues, with some critics claiming the text promotes a softening of Church discipline regarding divorce and remarriage. He described this view as a misunderstanding.

Pope Leo XIV intends to apply the teachings of his predecessor to current situations to recover the truth and beauty of the document. Larry Chapp noted that the exhortation serves as a theological meditation on marriage and family that includes traditional interpretations of the indissolubility of the sacrament.
